At CES 2025, I checked out the Haus.me microhaus Pro, a self-contained living cabin that you can set up virtually anywhere
We may no longer be at the peak of the Tiny home trendbut the idea of a resource-efficient, efficiently built home that can be placed almost anywhere is still attractive. Today at CESI was allowed to view the 2025 model of the microhaus Pro from Haus.me from California. It was shiny, smartly decorated and honestly not as expensive as I thought it would be.
The interior of the 120 square meter unit is decorated entirely in wood tones, glass and soft neutral tones. It’s as if you took a shipping container and replaced the hard lines and corrugated steel with rounded corners and floor-to-ceiling windows. The finishes sparkle and every part of the room is maximized with Ikea-like efficiency in a small space, such as the queen-size murphy bed that folds to reveal a table and two bench seats. The kitchen has a small refrigerator and microwave. The price includes a complete tableware set from Villeroy & Boch. In the bathroom there is a large shower.
The devices can be used virtually anywhere without the need for site preparation – if the ground is level, it works. The Microhaus Pro is also climate independent and can be placed in snowy forests, hot deserts, and beaches with temperate climates (although the hot and cold climate packages cost about $10.00 extra each). It also meets California seismic fire codes and CAT 5 hurricane regulations.
Installation usually takes less than an hour and requires no special connections – a garden hose and extension cable are sufficient. And thanks to its size, it falls below the size limit that requires approval. The included 3.6 kWh battery can power everything in the house for four days and is available as an option atmospheric water production and a battery life of four days. Drinking water is filtered through reverse osmosis and the waste disposal system “melts” everything into a liquid that can be drained via an extendable pipe that you can connect to a septic tank or holding tank.
The Pro model also offers high-end benefits like voice control via the wall-mounted Apple HomePod. During my tour, Haus.me CEO Max Gerbut asked Siri to lower the blinds, and the company obliged. You also get the full package, dishes, towels, etc. – I even saw a drawer full of M&Ms in the kitchen and was assured you’d get those too.
The Pro model is a more luxurious and robust edition for Airbnb and rental purposes and costs $89.99. If you don’t need the smart home features, battery backup, and included dishes, you can grab the Microhaus Lite for $59,990. There is also a shell version for $35,000 that includes just the HVAC system, lighting, wiring, bathroom fixtures and plumbing.
One thing that is not included in any of the micro home models is solar energy production. For that, you’ll need to upgrade to the 400 and 800 square foot units. These are just as convenient to place anywhere, but are completely autonomous and cost $199,000 and $299,000 respectively. Note that none of the prices include delivery.
It’s true – none of these prices are small numbers. But I have helped build yurts, tiny houses and sheds. I’ve lived in more than one hand-built home and looked at many other modular, prefab options. In comparison, these prices are not particularly high, especially considering that there is almost no site preparation, no installation, and no contractor required.
The microhaus Pro can now be ordered on the Haus.me website.
