The goal was long overdue as Villa went close twice before the goal. First, Duran was in the open field after just 19 seconds, but his shot was parried by Stefan Ortega. After the resulting corner, the German made a brilliant save to fend off Pau Torres’ header and the ball went just over the line.
Despite Jack Grealish’s best efforts against his former club, City barely managed anything in the first 35 minutes. Their best attempt came from Phil Foden, but his shot was saved by Emiliano Martinez in the Villa goal.
City went into the competition with just one win from their last 11 games
