Arsenal vs Tottenham “as big as it gets” for Postecoglou

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou says Wednesday’s north London derby against Arsenal is “as big as it’s ever been” as he hopes for a rare away win in the game.

Spurs have won just one of their last 31 away Premier League games against Arsenal, the last of which came in November 2010.

Both teams have been plagued by injuries of late, with Tottenham needing extra time to beat non-league side Tamworth at the weekend.

Former Celtic manager Postecoglou says this week’s game is the perfect chance to get back to winning ways in the Premier League.

He said: “From the moment I arrived I felt like it was intense, but at the same time I never tried to be disingenuous about it and say, ‘This means the world to me’ when I I literally just arrived.”

“But you understand the context of the game and what it means for the club, what it means for the fans and also what it means for our season.

“I was very aware of that perspective the first time we played it. A bit like me up in Glasgow, you know exactly what it means and are aware of the consequences – both positive and negative.

“I put a lot of emphasis on it from the first game and this year is bigger than ever, especially for us and our season.

“We need to start winning games in the league and there is no better place to start.”

Spurs last won in the league before Christmas and have won just three of their last 13 games in all competitions. Timo Werner has been added to the list due to his injury problems, but Richarlison is available for a game against Arsenal – who have their own problems.

“Given the position we are in at the moment in the league, regardless of turning points, we need to start winning games and moving up the table,” Postecoglou said.

“Although it’s a big challenge for us tomorrow night, there’s a chance for us to do that.”
