Tottenham Hotspur will still be without a number of first-team players this Wednesday when they host Liverpool in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final.
Constant and devastating injuries have been the theme of Tottenham’s grueling season so far and Ange Postecoglou’s options remain extremely limited ahead of Liverpool’s visit. The defense has been weakened the most by fitness issues in recent months, but there are absences throughout the squad.
Spurs urgently need to end their 17-year trophy drought this season and Wednesday is a golden opportunity to get a foothold in the Carabao Cup final. However, they will have to deal with injuries and an excellent Liverpool side to reach the showpiece event.
Here they are Tottenham Players are missing from Wednesday’s duel Liverpool.
Tottenham will have just a single man in their first back five on Wednesday night, with Pedro Porro the last man at right-back. Elsewhere, Christian Romero, Micky van de Ven And Ben Davies are all missing at center back, while Destiny Udogie will be out long-term as he recently sustained a hamstring injury.
To make matters worse, Spurs are currently without their best goalkeeper. William Vicar has been missing since the end of November and his successor Fraser Forster also struggles with illness. Third player Brandon Austin made his debut in the 2-1 defeat to Newcastle United at the weekend.
However, Spurs signed a new goalkeeper in the first week of the January transfer window, bringing in Slavia Prague youngster Antonin Kinsky. He is available and eligible to play against Liverpool.
Luckily for Postecoglou, Tottenham have no injury problems in midfield, but will have to do without them James Madison And Pape Matar Sarr on Wednesday evening. Both are serving one match ban after receiving two yellow cards in the previous rounds of the Carabao Cup.
Pleasingly, Rodrigo Bentancur has returned from his Premier League ban which saw him miss Saturday’s game against the Magpies. He is likely to partner Yves Bissouma in the middle of the park, while teenager Lucas Bergvall could earn more minutes after starting at the weekend.
While Tottenham are keen to add some more attacking depth in January, they have experienced failures before Richarlison I recently returned to training. Due to ongoing fitness issues, the Brazilian is yet to start in the Premier League this season and will miss Wednesday as he has not yet fully recovered from a hamstring injury.
The same injury caused the new signing to miss the summer Wilson Odobert since October and the former Burnley striker will be missing from Liverpool’s visit. Young though Mikey Moore could be in the squad as he has been absent due to illness since the beginning of November.
