Agadir has a reconstruction museum, the city’s memory space, which experienced a devastating earthquake in 1960. This on Saturday, March 1, 2025, opened by the head of the government director Aziz Akhannouch is located in the former headquarters of Bank al-Maghrib (BAM).
This project, in the context of memorial activities on the 65th anniversary of the reconstruction of Agadir (February 27th to March 5), is part of the city development program of the city 2020-2024. The museum has highlighted the memory of Agadir since the first moments of the earthquake, which on February 29, 1960 met the city until its reconstruction. It will enable visitors to feel the extent of this catastrophe, but above all the resilience of the city’s residents according to this striking episode.
In an explanation of the press, Mr. Akhannouch stated that this day has the 65th anniversary of the reconstruction of the city of Agadir, which was started by the late SM Mohammed V and the royal family, and added that the construction is continued thanks to the royal programs that the city improves during the day. At the same time, the government manager started the rehabilitation work of four old places that were created immediately after the earthquake, namely the place of the Crown Prince, Place Rialto, the place of departure from the Green Marche and Place Du Market Municipal. These projects require an investment of 20 million DH, which are borne by the municipality of Agadir (10 million DH) and the Ministry of National Regional Planning, Urban Planning, Housing and Urban Policy (10 million DH). This includes the paving of places, the creation of green rooms, wells, lighting and an aquarium.
