Doha -A large expansion project for Tangier Ibn Batouta Airport was adopted with 3.27 billion US dollars (327 million US dollars). The completion is planned for June 2029. The project aims to triple the annual passenger capacity of the airport of 2 to 7 million travelers.
This will support Morocco’s preparations for the African Cup of Nations 2025 (AFCON) and the FIFA World Cup 2030, which the North African country organizes together with Spain and Portugal.
The expansion of 199 hectares includes the construction of a new passenger terminal, a control tower, the aircraft parking spaces and the parking spaces for vehicles.
Modern amenities such as e-gate systems and intelligent digital infrastructure are integrated into the new facilities.
A partnership agreement was approved by several stakeholders, including the interior ministries, Islamic matters, finances, equipment and water as well as transport and logistics.
The National Airports Office (Onda), the Wilaya of the Tanger-Teuan-Al Hceima region, the Regional Council, the Tanger Municipal Council, and the Loukkos Hydraulic Basin Agency are also signs of the convention.
The project falls into the broader strategy for the development of aviation in Morocco, which includes a nationwide investment of MAD 42 billion (4.2 billion US dollars) in airport expansion projects by 2030.

This comprehensive plan, known as “Airports 2030”, aims to modernize large airports across the country, including Casablanca, Rabat, Marrakech, Fez, Tetouan and Agadir.
Morocco’s airports recorded Important growth in 2024, which completes 32.7 million passengers, an increase of 21% compared to the previous year. International passenger traffic rose by 20%, while domestic trips rose by 30%.
The country’s aviation authorities project Passenger traffic reached 60 million and 90 million by 2030 to 2035.
A steering committee, chaired by the Wali in the region, will monitor the Tanger Airport expansion project. The committee will coordinate with all partner companies in order to be ready in time and to meet all the challenges during implementation.
The expansion project includes the development of new access roads and tries to improve tourism and economic growth of the region and at the same time meet the increasing air traffic requirements, in particular the preparation for upcoming important events.
This comes after the evaluation of the FIFA report In December 2024, Tangier gave lower ratings for the infrastructure and achieved 2.2 out of 5 for accommodation and 2.6 for transport.
In January Laymouri Mayor Mounir announced Comprehensive plans to cope with these challenges, including an investment of $ 1.124 billion ($ 112.4 million) in new public transport and the implementation of the city’s first high-quality urban bus traffic line.
The mayor emphasized that the city “would not save any efforts” to ensure the success of AFCON 2025 and the 2030 World Cup.
The airport, which was previously known as Tanger Boukhalef Airport, is named after IBN Battuta (1304-1368), a renowned Moroccan traveler born in Tangier.
