His oeuvre is so vast and covers so many genres, in fact, that Nolan’s fans often have heated debates about what his best work is. However, if you are a science fiction fan, there is no doubt beginning is the director’s masterpiece and you can stream its breathtaking perfection on Netflix now.
Inception on Netflix
If you’re watching beginning For the first time on Netflix, you may need a primer on the plot: Basically, we follow the misadventures of a group whose specialty is infiltrating the dreams of corporate titans and extracting important trade secrets from their subconscious. The group’s leader is hired to do something that was widely thought impossible: plant an idea in someone’s head rather than simply steal information. Despite perfect planning, the operation soon goes awry and our protagonists fight for their lives in a reality where the rules are constantly changing and the unconscious dreamscape threatens to turn into a deadly nightmare.
beginning should appeal to Netflix viewers because of its great cast, starting with Leonardo DiCaprio as a dream thief who is hired to plant an idea in the subconscious of a target played by him Cillian Murphy. Ken Watanabe plays the businessman who hires him and Joseph Gordon Levitt plays the partner who helps plan the heist. Other big names round out DiCaprio’s team, including Elliot Page and Tom Hardy, and our main character is haunted in the dreamscape by an ex-wife, played perfectly by Marion Cotillard.
A science fiction success
With a budget of $160 million beginning is better than most Science fiction Originals on Netflix, and you can definitely see the money on screen thanks to the larger-than-life imagery and trippy visuals that bring the subconscious to life. Luckily for Christopher Nolan and Warner Bros. equally made that big-budget risk pay off. The film grossed a respectable $839 million at the box office, cementing its place in Hollywood history despite becoming the source of countless hilarious memes.
In other words beginning differs from Netflix’s typical sci-fi offerings in that it has won many prestigious awards. Notably, the film won four Oscars, including the Oscar for Best Visual Effects and Best Cinematography (to this day, this is probably the most beautiful film you see all year). And while the film didn’t take home these particular awards, it was nominated for other Academy Awards, such as Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay, which gives you an idea of how much this film impressed both critics and audiences has.
Speaking of impressing the critics: beginning differs from other Netflix science fiction films in that it has convinced individual critics. Meanwhile, on the website’s Pocornmeter, viewers gave it a 91 percent, which certainly underlines how well Christopher Nolan’s masterpiece has impressed almost everyone who sees it.
