Instagram is launching a new video editing app that certainly sounds a lot like CapCut

Instagram boss Adam Mosseri accepted it Topics on Sunday with yet another announcement this weekendthe timing of which certainly had nothing to do with it TikTok And other ByteDance-owned apps (meager) it’s getting dark: A new, free video editing app called Edits is on the way. Instagram’s Edits is aimed at people who edit videos on their phones and offers “a full suite of creative tools.” These include higher quality recordings, shareable drafts, trending audio, insights into how your Reels are performing, and an Inspiration tab in addition to the usual editing tools.

If all of this reminds you of CapCut, TikTok’s sister video editing app, you’re not alone. In Answer Given the immediate comparisons, Mosseri called Edits “CapCut, but more for YouTubers than casual videomakers.”

Edits is not available yet, but you can pre-order it at App Store If you’re an iOS user and Mosseri says an Android version is “coming soon.” While he announces the release sometime in February, the App Store page says March 13th. And don’t expect it to be too polished upon release. “The first version will be incomplete, so please be patient, but I’m really excited to put this in your hands,” Mosseri said.

The announcement came shortly after TikTok announced its app would be coming back online in the US, just about 12 hours after it was shut down. CapCut hasn’t returned yet, but it’s expected to follow suit. Trump said on social media that after he is sworn in, he will announce an executive order that would extend ByteDance’s time to sort out TikTok’s future.

While Threads users have called out Instagram over the timing of the announcement, Mosseri said the app has been in development for months, “and I think it will end up being very different than CapCut.” With that in mind, he said: “Edits will have a much broader range of creative tools, and probably a smaller one “Have an addressable audience.” Think of a place where you can track all your ideas, rather than templates. Imagine AI video editing tools on a per-clip or per-video basis. Find new insights into why your videos are succeeding or struggling.” It looks like Edits may have a leg up on CapCut, at least because its App Store page says that videos don’t have a watermark when exported.
