Ultimately, the 16-year-old was shot.

Baldonado — who was reportedly the same age — was originally charged with first-degree murder in 2023 PEOPLE.

Prison visits reportedly revealed that Ortiz-Chavez wanted to confess to killing Ruiz. However, Baldonado insisted she did not do so. Prosecutors reportedly believe Ortiz-Chavez initially let her son accept the murder because he was a minor and would receive a less harsh sentence.

However, in March 2023, Baldonado’s brother reportedly wrote to a woman on Facebook that his “brother…didn’t tell his mother,” they say Law and crime.

“I locked up an older brother because of her,” Baldonado’s brother reportedly told the woman. “…I hate her for what she did. He deserves to be home with his daughter. She’ll never get to know him because she’s a selfish bitch.”

At that point, the woman came forward and shared the information with police. Ortiz-Chavez was subsequently arrested and charged with second-degree murder with firearm enhancement. Per KRQE NewsOn Wednesday, January 15, she pleaded guilty to the charge.

Law and crime reports that the New Mexico mother could face 18 years in prison if convicted. Meanwhile, Baldonado’s charges were updated to “conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and aggravated assault.” PEOPLE adds that he will remain behind bars until he turns 21.

The shocking Ortiz-Chavez incident isn’t the only one making headlines. As The shadow room As previously reported, Simon Vickers was accused of fatally stabbing his 14-year-old daughter earlier this month while they were in her kitchen.

The incident reportedly occurred in July 2024 and left Vickers’ daughter Scarlett with an 11 centimeter deep wound.
