For science fiction fans, there is perhaps no theme more common than time travel. From Star Trek to Back to the futurewe’re used to our favorite heroes and villains traveling through time to either save or threaten everything that ever was or will be. This has of course led to fan debates about which film made the best use of this motif, but these arguments are unnecessary since the answer has been staring us in the face for over 30 years. Simply put, Timecop is the coolest time travel movie of all time and you can stream it now for free on Tubi.

Timecop rules

Timecop (adapted from the story of the same name by Mike Richardson and Mark Verheiden, published by Dark Horse Comics) focuses on a government agency tasked with preventing crimes involving time travel. A former police officer, agent Max Walker gets caught up in a convoluted contemporary story about a senator who abuses time travel to finance his presidential ambitions. After this senator kidnaps a Biff Tannen and successfully changes the future in his favor, it will take all of Walker’s skills and knowledge to save more than the world…he must save history itself.

Great achievements are the cornerstone of Timecop…Ron Silver (known for his Emmy-nominated role in The West Wing) plays off the sleazy senator to manipulate the schedule. Meanwhile, Mia Sara (best known for playing the title character’s romantic partner in Ferris Bueller’s day off) plays Max Walker’s wife. Finally, Walker is played by the martial arts film maestro Jean Claude Van Dammewhose unique action-schlock chutzpah transforms Timecop into something almost transcendently strange.

Fortunately, the general audience didn’t think so Timecop too strange when it premiered. The film grossed $101.6 million on a budget of $27 million. Although the film wasn’t exactly a blockbuster success, it earned enough to spawn a short-lived ABC television adaptation in 1997. Finally, we got a direct-to-video sequel in 2003, although neither the sequel nor the television series brought back Van Damme.

The original Timecop may have impressed at the box office, but it didn’t really impress critics. To Rotten tomatoesthis film has a critical rating of 42 percent. In general, critics acknowledged that the film would be well received Science fiction Fans who managed to suspend their disbelief and not ask too many questions about time travel. However, critics largely agreed that the film fell far short of cinematic time travel classics like James Cameron’s The Terminator.

Watch Timecop

So, moment of truth: why the hell do I recommend you watch this? Timecopa critically reviled sci-fi film whose pop culture footprint can be measured in shitty follow-up films? First, despite the snobbery of critics who have disdained science fiction in the past, this film’s time travel plot is both clever and compelling. His vision of how humans would inevitably abuse temporal mechanisms for wealth and power is as relatable and creative as the film as a whole really does full justice to its crazy premise.

But above all, this film is worth seeing for Jean-Claude Van Damme, who previously starred in action film classics like… Blood sport, KickboxerAnd Universal soldier. He’s not the most soulful or expressive actor, but he makes up for it with a raw physicality that turns what should have been standard-issue movie fights into beautiful depictions of real martial arts. Van Damme has always been a special force in his own right thanks to his martial arts skills, and in the high-tech world of Timecop, his brand of killer kung fu stands out all the more thanks to its wonderfully precise but low-tech execution.

Will you like it Timecop just like me, or do you want to go back in time and warn your slightly younger self not to even watch it? You won’t know until you experience the intersection between action shlock and ambitious science fiction for yourself. And if you do end up going back in time, remember that touching your past self will kill both of you, so be like that very Be careful when knocking the remote control away.
