Storyan intellectual property blockchain, believes that creators, developers and artists should be rewarded for their contributions to AI. But it’s not easy to trace their contributions, and Storywhich has raised $140 million to date (formerly Story Protocol), is doing something about it.

Story, the global intellectual property blockchain, has announced the use of Stability AI’s cutting-edge models to usher in a new era of open source AI development that enables contributors – creators, developers, artists – to capture value , which they create through their contribution to the AI ecosystem. By leveraging Stability AI’s technology, Story aims to address the critical challenge of properly attributing, tracking and monetizing creative work generated by AI.

Story focuses on addressing the lack of a clear path for creators to monetize their derivative works in the open source ecosystem. Despite the incredible advances in AI, proper attribution and monetization of creators’ intellectual property has not kept up with the pace of innovation.

“We are excited to leverage Stability AI’s models to address the most pressing challenges we face with the rapid rise of AI,” said Jason Zhao, chief protocol officer at PIP Labs, Story’s first principal contributor an explanation. “The combination of AI and blockchain is not only incredibly powerful, but also necessary. Blockchains secure digital property rights in the age of AI-driven creative abundance. Leveraging technology from Stability AI and Story, we show how the right incentive structures can ensure attribution and empower creators, driving AI development.”

Story and its ecosystem applications will leverage Stability AI’s leading foundational image models to build AI applications that embed tracking of contributions across the AI development lifecycle to provide fair compensation to all creators involved in a monetized output.

Mahojin and ABLO are two AI applications built on Story, leveraging Stability AI’s base models and Story’s blockchain technology. Mahojin, a search-generated AI remixing platform, and ABLO, a collaborative AI platform that enables developers to design physical goods with leading brand IPs, leverage Stability AI’s models to help users easily implement their creative Visions to enable, and Story’s technology to enable provenance and attribution across the AI stack. These two projects present real-world use cases and illustrate how creatives can create new opportunities to protect their intellectual property and make money from their contributions in a dynamic, shared creative economy.

With this type of tracking, artists and other creatives can be paid for their work more fairly, quickly and easily. This also means that the work of these artists, creators and developers could be used more widely.

Stability AI, maker of Stable Diffusion, is used by more than five million people to generate images and media using its generative AI model. It focuses on open source models and has expanded to produce video, audio, and more.

“Empowering creators is at the heart of everything we do at Stability AI. We are excited to have our models deployed on Story’s blockchain technology to ensure proper attribution and rewards to contributors,” Scott Trowbridge, vice president of Stability AI, said in a statement. He said a decentralized model for the creative industries is becoming increasingly important.

Story said it is committed to exploring various use cases of how AI and blockchain can come together to meet the evolving needs of creators and developers in the age of generative AI. For example, one area of research is registering training data such as an artist’s unique style or voice as IP with transparent terms of use on Story.

Anyone can then use this IP to train and refine their own model. When a creator uses this model to generate an output that is monetized, everyone in that chain of creation wins and benefits together.

By leveraging Stability AI’s cutting-edge models, Story takes an important step toward creating a sustainable and fair Internet in the age of AI.

PIP Labs, an initial major contributor to the Story Network, is backed by investors including A16z crypto, Endeavor and Polychain. PIP Labs was co-founded by a serial entrepreneur with a $440 million exit and the youngest Prime Minister of Deepmind, along with the experienced founding leadership team with diverse backgrounds in consumer technology, generative AI and Web3 infrastructure.
